Question 148: Where do I need to bend so I don’t break?

Sunday, October 4th, 2026

Near a riverbank, a tall, sturdy tree stood beside a slender reed. The tree was proud of its thick trunk and deep roots. Whenever the wind moved through the valley, it laughed as the reed bowed low.

“You are pushed around by every breeze,” the tree said. “Look at me. I never move.”

The reed answered quietly, “I bend so I can remain.”

One evening, the sky darkened and a violent storm swept across the river. Rain pounded the earth. The water rose. Fierce winds tore through the bank.

The tree locked itself against every gust. It stiffened its branches and treated the storm like an opponent it had to defeat. The reed yielded, bending nearly to the ground as the wind passed over it.

The tree mistook the reed’s flexibility for weakness. But when a powerful gust struck, the tree’s rigid trunk could absorb no more. Its roots tore from the soaked earth, and it crashed to the ground.

By morning, the storm had passed. The reed slowly rose and stood upright once again.

The plants nearby understood what the tree had not: strength without adaptability can become fragility. The reed survived not because it faced less pressure, but because it knew how to change shape without losing its roots.

In leadership and life, bending might mean adjusting a plan, listening to criticism, asking for help, or releasing the need to control every outcome. It does not require abandoning our values.

Resilience is knowing what must remain rooted and what can change with the wind. The strongest leaders do not prove themselves by remaining unchanged. They protect their purpose by adapting—and preserve the possibility of standing again after the storm.
