Question 147: What are some ways that I can challenge my own biases and become more open-minded?
Sunday, September 27th, 2026
When Charles Darwin spent decades developing his theory of natural selection, he understood that gathering evidence was only part of the work. The harder task was protecting his thinking from the mind’s tendency to favor what it already believed.
Darwin created a simple rule for himself. Whenever he encountered a published fact, new observation, or thought that contradicted his conclusions, he wrote it down immediately. He had noticed that inconvenient evidence disappeared from memory much faster than evidence that supported him.
That habit shaped the way he worked. Rather than treating opposing evidence as a threat, he treated it as a test. Some ideas became stronger. Others had to be modified or abandoned. In his autobiography, Darwin acknowledged that nearly every hypothesis he first formed eventually required significant revision.
This is what intellectual humility looks like in practice.
We rarely challenge bias by simply deciding to be unbiased. We need habits that interrupt our certainty. We can seek out credible disagreement, write down the strongest argument against our position, ask what evidence would change our mind, and spend time listening to people whose experiences differ from our own.
Open-mindedness does not mean believing everything or surrendering our convictions. It means caring enough about the truth to test those convictions honestly.
The goal is not to prove ourselves wrong. It is to become less invested in being right than in seeing clearly. When we make room for evidence that challenges us, we do not weaken our judgment—we transform it. Possibility expands when our identity is no longer dependent on our first answer.
