Question 146: What do you love to do?

Sunday, September 20th, 2026

This question took me in a few different directions.

First, I thought about the people I love. My wife, my kids, my siblings all quickly came to mind.

Then I thought about the things I value: making a difference, my health, family, friendships, paying it forward.

Then I started thinking about the things I actually enjoy doing.

Giving. I get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from it. Learning—sometimes I swear I can actually feel my brain getting bigger =D. Serving, and the appreciation that comes from it. Helping people grow and develop. Winning, whether that’s in sports or some cheesy competition that probably doesn’t matter. Making people smile. Getting someone to think differently about something.

I sat back and tried to find the common thread through all of those things.

I couldn’t.

When I think about love, I think about an incredibly strong emotion. I remember falling in love with my wife and feeling like she was all I could think about. I remember starting PRACTICE and, similarly, it was all I could think about.

So I reframed the question: What could I do 24/7 with a smile on my face?

I knew immediately that it couldn’t be a specific task. I get bored too easily.

And then it dawned on me.

I love to build.

So many of the things I enjoy come back to building something.

I’m drawn to my day job because I get to help children reach their potential. But I also get to help our people reach their potential. And the trifecta is getting to see how all of those individual pieces build an organization capable of doing something meaningful.

Given the choice between something fully baked and something where I get to customize the ending, I’ll almost always choose the latter.

I’d rather teach someone and help them develop than simply have someone arrive with all the lived experience they need.

When I’m learning, I’m building myself. When I’m saving and investing, I’m building our family’s future and legacy. When I’m teaching, I’m building someone else’s capacity. When I’m working on PRACTICE, I’m building an organization and its impact.

Apparently, I can build all day.

But I also found myself wondering: Who cares what you love to do?

Knowing the answer only becomes useful if you do something with it.

Maybe part of designing a life you love isn’t just figuring out how to minimize the things you don’t enjoy. Maybe it’s deliberately stuffing your life, your calendar, and your commitments with more of the things you do.

For me, that means making sure there’s always something to build.
