What forgiveness are you withholding?

Sunday, July 5th, 2026

In 1990, Nelson Mandela walked out of Victor Verster Prison after 27 years behind bars. He had been separated from his family, stripped of his freedom, and forced to endure decades of injustice under South Africa’s apartheid regime.

No one would have blamed him if he came out angry.

No one would have questioned it if he sought revenge.

But Mandela understood something powerful: bitterness might feel justified, but it can also become another prison. As he later reflected, he knew that if he did not leave his hatred behind, he would still be imprisoned, even after being physically free.

Instead of using his freedom to punish those who had oppressed him, Mandela chose a different path. He worked to guide South Africa through reconciliation rather than retaliation. He invited former enemies into conversation. He helped create space for truth, accountability, and healing. His forgiveness did not erase the pain or excuse the injustice. It gave him the ability to move forward without allowing the past to control the future.

That is the hard part about forgiveness. We often think withholding it protects us. We believe it keeps the other person accountable. But sometimes, the forgiveness we withhold becomes a weight we carry alone.

Forgiveness does not always mean restoring access, rebuilding trust, or pretending nothing happened. Sometimes it simply means releasing the grip that pain has on our spirit.

Mandela’s life reminds us that forgiveness is not weakness. It is one of the highest forms of strength. It is the choice to stop letting yesterday decide what tomorrow is.
