CASE STUDY
100% Math Growth Across Two 3rd Grade Tutoring Groups
PS 68 Port Richmond School for Visionary Learning | Staten Island, NY | 2025–26
The Administrator Challenge
PS 68 needed targeted 3rd grade Math support that could help scholars strengthen foundational skills, build confidence, and make measurable progress during the school year. Across two tutoring groups, MAP Growth data gave the school a clear way to track whether scholars were moving forward.
The PRACTICE Approach
- Tutoring support focused on 3rd grade Math across two classes.
- Beginning- and middle-of-year MAP Growth results were used to monitor progress.
- Support gave scholars repeated practice with priority Math skills and helped teachers see where students were moving.
What Stood Out
- Every participating scholar increased their MAP Growth Math score.
- The average score rose 12.5 points, from 181.6 to 194.1.
- Fifteen of 20 scholars met projected growth, with observed gains ranging from 1 to 27 points.
Why This Model Fits a Busy Elementary Campus
This model gives teachers targeted Math support during the school day while giving scholars repeated chances to practice priority skills. At PS 68, that support helped both 3rd grade groups show clear growth by the middle of the year.
Takeaways for School Leaders
- Every participating scholar across both 3rd grade Math groups showed positive score movement by the middle of the year.
- The average observed gain exceeded the average projected gain across the full participant group.
- These results give PS 68 a strong foundation for continuing targeted Math support, refining groups, and strengthening progress monitoring in 2026-27.
