A 17-Week Tutoring Cycle Moved Students Closer to Grade Level and the School from D to C

TAMPA BAY BOULEVARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA | 2025–26

A 17-week, classroom-embedded tutoring cycle supported grades 4–5, with especially visible
movement among students who began two or more grade levels behind.

The Administrator Challenge

The school needed focused Math and ELA support for grades 4–5, particularly 5th-grade Math, without separating tutoring from daily instruction. Leaders wanted small groups that could respond to diagnostic data and reinforce benchmark standards.

The PRACTICE Approach

  • Classroom push-in support, coordinated with the teacher and existing curriculum.
  • A consistent cadence of 90 minutes weekly in three
    30-minute sessions for 17 weeks.
  • A 5:1 ratio, with small-group work in multiplication,
    division, and priority standards.

Why This Model Fits a Busy Title I Campus

It adds a trained adult inside the school day, protects a consistent dosage, and keeps support connected to the students, standards, and routines teachers already know.

Takeaways for School Leaders

  • The distribution shifted toward grade level: 31 points more students were within one grade level or better.
  • The share two or more grade levels behind fell by 24 points, a practical signal for tiered-support planning.
  • Results were mixed across schoolwide measures, reinforcing the value of frequent diagnostics and course correction.

VOICE FROM THE SCHOOL

“Antonia has developed a strong rapport with the 5th grade students she is teaching through small group instruction.
