Science Regents Passing Rates Soar with Targeted Support

W. H. Maxwell CTE High School | Brooklyn, NY | 2025–26

The Administrator Challenge

Maxwell needed Science Regents support that could live inside active classrooms. Students were working through Biology and Earth Science vocabulary, labs, graphs, data tables, exam-style questions, packets, and make-up work, while teachers needed another trained adult who could help students get unstuck without slowing full-class instruction.

The PRACTICE Approach

  • Seven Education Champions supported grades 9–12 in Biology and Earth Science from Oct. 3 through June 16.
  • Tutors reinforced Regents review, labs, graphs, data tables, vocabulary, Earth Science Reference Tables, and multiple-choice strategies.
  • Students revisited missed questions, packets, make-up work, and difficult content through diagrams, guided annotation, and step-by-step questioning.
  • Tutors worked inside classroom routines, giving students another chance to understand the content while teachers kept instruction moving.
  • Gradebook access supported grading, notes, family communication, and intervention documentation from January through June.

What Stood Out

  • Biology passing increased from 12% to 74%, a 62 percentage-point jump.
  • Earth & Space passing increased from 8% to 93%, an 85 percentage-point jump.
  • The support model kept Regents preparation connected to daily classroom work, including labs, vocabulary, assignments, make-up work, and exam-style practice.

Why This Model Fits a Busy High School Campus

This model gave Maxwell more Science capacity inside the school day. Students could revisit difficult Regents content in real time, teachers could keep lessons moving, and tutoring stayed connected to the labs, assignments, make-up work, and exam practice already happening in classrooms.

Takeaways for School Leaders

  • Maxwell’s Biology and Earth & Space results show major year-over-year movement during the same year PRACTICE added classroom-based Science Regents support.
  • Tutors helped students work through labs, vocabulary, graphs, data tables, make-up work, and exam-style practice while teachers kept instruction moving.
  • The model creates a strong foundation for continued Science support and for adapting a similar structure to Algebra and ELA interventions.

VOICE FROM THE SCHOOL

Alexis continues to be an asset within the classroom. She helps students understand the content and complete classroom activities when they need a little more assistance and scaffolding.
