The Administrator Challenge

P.S. 146 needed targeted grades 3-5 support that could help scholars strengthen foundational literacy, classroom assignments, Math problem-solving, and state-test readiness while teachers continued moving daily instruction forward. The BoY data showed a clear opportunity to help more students move toward grade-level expectations.

The PRACTICE Approach

Four Education Champions supported grades 3-5 from Dec. 1, 2025 through Mar. 30, 2026.
In-person classroom and small-group tutoring reinforced foundational literacy, ELA classroom work, Math, and test readiness.
Tutors supported Fundations, Heggerty, dictation, letter recognition, closed syllables, reading passages, sentence writing, HMH work, text evidence, directions, and task completion.
Math problem-solving and practice-exam support gave scholars repeated chances to slow down, show work, and build readiness.

What Stood Out

The strongest signal is that 75.6% of students in the growth view showed BoY-to-MoY growth.
Students on or above grade level increased from 15.56% to 23.91% by midyear.
Both the On Grade Level and Above Grade Level groups grew from BoY to MoY.

Why This Model Fits a Busy Elementary Campus

This model gives teachers another trusted adult during the school day while giving scholars repeated chances to practice priority ELA and Math skills. At P.S. 146, that meant more small-group support, more help with classroom tasks, and more opportunities for students to build confidence and move toward grade-level expectations.

Takeaways for School Leaders

P.S. 146’s data shows a clear growth story by midyear, with 75.6% of students in the growth view showing progress.
More students moved into the on-grade-level and above-grade-level bands during the same year PRACTICE added grades 3-5 tutoring support.

PRACTICE’s intensive math tutoring program at PS 399 achieved a 97% success rate, with 57 out of 59 students meeting state promotion criteria in just 19 sessions.

Partnering Towards Proficiency

PRACTICE’s tailored summer literacy program at PS 1 Courtlandt nearly doubled English proficiency rates, elevating the school’s rating from “Needs Improvement” to “Good.”
