Why Just 15 Minutes of Reading a Day Is More Meaningful (And Easier!) Than You Think

What if one small habit could change your child’s entire summer?

It’s not a workbook.
It’s not a tutoring marathon.
It’s not hours of screen time with educational videos.

It’s simply 15 minutes of reading a day.

That’s it. Just 15 minutes. And it can make a huge difference in your child’s learning, confidence, and love of reading.

At PRACTICE, we’ve spent years supporting families and helping students grow. We’ve seen what works, and we’ve seen how easy it is to fall behind during the summer. One of the most important tools we’ve found for keeping kids on track? Daily reading.

Why 15 Minutes a Day Matters So Much

You might be wondering: “Can 15 minutes of reading really make a difference?”

Yes. And here’s why.

A massive study of over 9.9 million students found that kids who read less than 15 minutes a day made little to no growth in reading. But kids who got 15 minutes of reading in a day or more? They made strong progress, often above grade level.

Even more inspiring? Students from low-income homes who read 15+ minutes daily outperformed wealthier students who didn’t read at all. That means reading can close learning gaps and give every child a chance to succeed, no matter their background.

But here’s the catch: less than half of students in the study were reading 15 minutes a day.

So what’s getting in the way?

Why It’s Hard to Build the Habit

Let’s be honest, summer can be chaotic. Between camps, vacations, family events, and screen time, it’s easy for reading to slip through the cracks.

Plus, some kids feel burned out from school, or they don’t know what to read. Parents often aren’t sure where to start, especially without the structure of a classroom.

The good news? You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need a simple routine that’s flexible, fun, and consistent to make 15 minutes of reading a day easy.

What Counts as Reading? (Spoiler: A Lot!)

Getting in 15 minutes of reading doesn’t have to mean sitting down with a big novel or textbook. It can be just about anything:

  • A comic book or graphic novel
  • A kid’s magazine
  • A recipe or instructions for a LEGO set
  • A short story, poem, or joke book
  • A nonfiction book about animals, space, or sports

If your child is reading and engaged, it counts. In fact, switching it up is a great way to keep things exciting and avoid boredom.

The key is to pick something that stretches your child just a little. They should understand most of the words, but come across a few new ones to grow their vocabulary.

A Simple Routine for 15 Minutes of Reading

Here’s an easy structure families can use (based on our own PRACTICE approach) to make your child’s 15 minutes of reading meaningful:

Before Reading:
Ask, “What do you think this is about?”
This builds prediction skills and gets your child thinking.

During Reading:
Let them read alone or together with you.
Help them write down new words or questions in a small notebook.

After Reading: Ask these 3 questions:

  1. What was it about?
  2. How does it connect to your life or the world?
  3. Did you like it? Why or why not?

This whole process takes just 15–20 minutes, and builds reading skills, comprehension, and confidence.

Where to Find Books Without Stress

You don’t need a huge book collection to get started. Here are some helpful (and free!) resources:

Don’t forget your local library’s summer reading program, or check out thrift stores and Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood.

Pro tip: Let your child pick what they read. Giving them a choice makes them more excited to read.

What If My Child Doesn’t Like Reading?

You’re not alone. Some kids feel like reading is just more schoolwork. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are a few ways to help:

  • Read with your child, even if it’s just a few pages
  • Let them read to a younger sibling, pet, or stuffed animal
  • Create a cozy reading corner with pillows and snacks
  • Schedule “quiet reading time” for the whole family (yes, you too!)

And remember: Kids watch what we do. If they see you enjoying a book or even reading a recipe or article, it sends a powerful message, reading is something we all do.
